Writer, photographer, musician.
Well, if you’ve got this far you’ve a reasonable idea of what I put up here; a mix of travel writing, short fiction and reviews of music/films/books that catch my eye. Longer term, I aspire to writing some longer, more polished fiction and sharing it with the world.
Reviews I’ve written for Ryan’s Smashing Life can be found here
I’ve been taking photographs since I was a young child, progressing from ancient 110 Instamatics inherited from family members to my first “proper” camera, a Canon 35mm compact that I received for my 10th birthday via Pentax 35mm SLRs and Fuji digital compacts to my current, hard-earned semi-pro Canon digital setup, a Canon 40D DSLR and small but growing stable of glass.
Enough about the gadgetry. I shoot mostly architecture and urban street/candids, with occasional landscape thrown in when there aren’t any tall buildings around to play with. I enjoy travelling to new places and photographing them, attempting to capture the essence of a place. Unfortunately for my friends, this makes me an infuritating travel companion prone to disappearing down side-streets or into churches, photographing their coffee cups at peculiar angles and emerging with several hundred shots, none of which involve them posing in front of famous monuments…
I play electric bass guitar, electric upright bass, electric and acoustic guitars and sing backing vocals.
Kerfuffle were a four-piece neo-traditional English folk band in which I played bass guitar and sang harmonies. We released five albums between 2003 and 2009, of which four are still available from the website or from Amazon. We set up RootBeat Records, an independent record label, to self-release our music, which lives on as a vehicle for our various side-projects, other bands and friends.
Post-Kerfuffle, I’ve done various bits of session work, some of which will see the light of day in the coming months. If you’re interested in having me play on your next project, get in touch and we’ll chat.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Leeds in July 2009. I maintain vague ambitions to do an MA in American Literature or something like it. Come back in September
2011 2012 2013 (?) and hold me to this!
I run a small agency, SlingShot Music, specialising in booking for British-based folk/roots/acoustic acts and providing promotional and marketing support for tours and record releases. Through SlingShot, I also do some design and photography work, mostly websites and social media marketing set-up.
